    Holographic Van der Waals phase transition for a hairy black hole

    The Van der Waals(VdW) phase transition in a hairy black hole is investigated by analogizing its charge, temperature, and entropy as the temperature, pressure, and volume in the fluid respectively. The two point correlation function(TCF), which is dual to the geodesic length, is employed to probe this phase transition. We find the phase structure in the temperature-geodesic length plane resembles as that in the temperature-thermal entropy plane besides the scale of the horizontal coordinate. In addition, we find the equal area law(EAL) for the first order phase transition and critical exponent of the heat capacity for the second order phase transition in the temperature-geodesic length plane are consistent with that in temperature-thermal entropy plane, which implies that the TCF is a good probe to probe the phase structure of the back hole.Comment: Accepted by Advances in High Energy Physics(The special issue: Applications of the Holographic Duality to Strongly Coupled Quantum Systems

    For different purposes, economists may use different topologies on types. We char- acterize the relationship among these various topologies. First, we show that for any general types, convergence in the uniform-weak topology implies convergence in both the strategic topology and the uniform strategic topology.     Analysis of a conserved cellulase transcriptional regulator reveals inducer-independent production of cellulolytic enzymes in Neurospora crassa.

    Cellulose is recalcitrant to deconstruction to glucose for use in fermentation strategies for biofuels and chemicals derived from lignocellulose. In Neurospora crassa, the transcriptional regulator, CLR-2, is required for cellulolytic gene expression and cellulose deconstruction. To assess conservation and divergence of cellulase gene regulation between fungi from different ecological niches, we compared clr-2 function with its ortholog (clrB) in the distantly related species, Aspergillus nidulans. Transcriptional profiles induced by exposure to crystalline cellulose were similar in both species. Approximately 50% of the cellulose-responsive genes showed strict dependence on functional clr-2/clrB, with a subset of 28 genes encoding plant biomass degrading enzymes that were conserved between N. crassa and A. nidulans. Importantly, misexpression of clr-2 under noninducing conditions was sufficient to drive cellulase gene expression, secretion, and activity in N. crassa, to a level comparable to wild type exposed to Avicel. However, misexpression of clrB in A. nidulans was not sufficient to drive cellulase gene expression under noninducing conditions, although an increase in cellulase activity was observed under crystalline cellulose conditions. Manipulation of clr-2 orthologs among filamentous fungi may enable regulated cellulosic enzyme production in a wide array of culture conditions and host strains, potentially reducing costs associated with enzyme production for plant cell wall deconstruction.     CENTRAL BANK FINANCIAL STRENGTH AND THE COST OF STERILIZATION IN CHINA

    This paper investigates the current monetary policy regime of China’s Central Bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC). This is done from the specific viewpoint of PBoC financial strength and the cost of its monetary policy instruments. The result shows that PBoC is constrained by the costs of its monetary policy instruments. PBoC tend to use less costly but market-distorting instruments such as deposit interest rate cap and reserve-ratio requirements, rather than more market-oriented but more costly instruments such as central bank note issuance. These costs remain under control today, but may rise in the future as PBoC accumulates more foreign assets. This, in turn, will jeopardize the Chinese monetary authority’s capability to maintain price stability.Central banking; Monetary policy; China

    Study of weakly-bound odd-A nuclei with quasiparticle blocking

    The coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach with quasiparticle blocking has been applied to study the odd-A weakly bound nuclei 17,19^{17,19}B and 37^{37}Mg, in which halo structures have been reported in experiments. The Skyrme nuclear forces SLy4 and UNEDF1 have been adopted in our calculations. The results with and without blocking have been compared to demonstrate the emergence of deformed halo structures due to blocking effects.     Multi-color optical monitoring of the quasar 3C 273 from 2005 to 2016

    We have monitored the quasar 3C 273 in optical VV, RR and II bands from 2005 to 2016. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. The variability amplitudes for most of nights are less than 10\% and four nights more than 20\%. When considering the nights with time spans >4>4 hours, the value of duty cycle (DC) is 14.17 per cent. Over the twelve years, the overall magnitude and color index variabilities are I=0m.67\bigtriangleup I=0^{\rm m}.67, R=0m.72\bigtriangleup R=0^{\rm m}.72, V=0m.68\bigtriangleup V=0^{\rm m}.68, and (VR)=0m.25\bigtriangleup (V-R)=0^{\rm m}.25 respectively. The largest clear IDV has an amplitude of 42% over just 5.8 minutes and the weakest detected IDV is 5.4% over 175 minutes. The BWB (bluer when brighter) chromatic trend is dominant for 3C 273 and appears at different flux levels on intraday timescales. The BWB trend exists for short-term timescales and intermediate-term timescales but different timescales have different correlations. There is no BWB trend for our whole time-series data sets. A significant anti-correlation between BWB trend and length of timescales is found. Combining with VV-band data from previous works, we find a possible quasi-periodicity of P=3918±1112P=3918\pm1112 days. The possible explanations for the observed variability, BWB chromatic trend and periodicity are discussed.Comment: 63 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ

    This written thesis is the supporting documentation for Still-Life, my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition. I use handmade ceramic still-life objects to depict my specific memories and experiences about my life before and after the pandemic. Death, hope, time, and emotion are the themes explored in this exhibition. This installation of ceramic sculptures not only recreates a historical moment in the pandemic but also captures the current times that we live in. It records the artist\u27s life and time during the COVID-19 pandemic. The selection of still-life objects for the exhibition often has special significance on a personal, cultural, social, and philosophical level. These objects come from daily life and are arranged thematically. The installation is designed to create a journal that expresses the artist\u27s experiences and emotions to evoke an emotional connection with the audience

    Symmetry Reduction and Boundary Modes for Fe-Chains on an s-wave Superconductor

    We investigate the superconducting phase diagram and boundary modes for a quasi-1D system formed by three Fe-Chains on an s-wave superconductor, motivated by the recent Princeton experiment. The ls\vec l\cdot\vec s onsite spin-orbit term, inter-chain diagonal hopping couplings, and magnetic disorders in the Fe-chains are shown to be crucial for the superconducting phases, which can be topologically trivial or nontrivial in different parameter regimes. For the topological regime a single Majorana and multiple Andreew bound modes are obtained in the ends of the chain, while for the trivial phase only low-energy Andreev bound states survive. Nontrivial symmetry reduction mechanism induced by the ls\vec l\cdot\vec s term, diagonal hopping couplings, and magnetic disorder is uncovered to interpret the present results. Our study also implies that the zero-bias peak observed in the recent experiment may or may not reflect the Majorana zero modes in the end of the Fe-chains.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; some minor errors are correcte
